July 31, 2010 Whalley Loses Tough one at Provincials |
|
The Whalley Major 11/12 Allstars took on Hastings in the semifinals Saturday afternoon. The game was a pitcher's dual and was 1-1 after 5. In the top of the 6th Hastings turned a lead off walk and a couple texas leaguers into 3 runs and took at 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the 6th Whalley couldn't muster a comeback and the game ended 4-1. A good game and the boys can be proud. Tyler Hoefer pitched great for Whalley. Congratulations on a very good year to the boys and Ed, Rob and Bob. |

July 26, 2010 12's lose nail biter to Little Mountain |
|
In a game that had more appeals than the Supreme Court Whalley dropped its first game of the Provincials to Little Mountain. Neither team generated much offence in a pitcher's duel with the tying and winning runs coming after an appealed play at first base which had ended the inning. Tyler Hoeffer pitched a gem going the distance but the Whalley bats were held at bay by Little Mountain who used a thumber first and when Whalley loaded the bases they called for their Ace. He got the job done and Whalley will retool for their next game today. It was a great game and more sure to follow with this team. Final 3-2 Little Mountain. |

July 25, 2010 Whalley 12's win fist provincial game |
|
Update from the Little League 12 year old Provincials.
The last game of day one had the host team, New Westminster, up against Whalley.
Both teams scored four runs a piece in the first inning, but then Whalley’s pitcher Shane Van Randen found his groove, as did Whalley’s bats, and it was all Whalley after that. They beat New Westminster 17-5. The All-Stars from Whalley collected 15 hits, while New Westminster put up eight. Little Mountain was the only team not in action on opening day. Their first contest comes tomorrow against Whalley at 12:00 p.m at Morneau field. See full coverage, articles and videos at

July 23, 2010 Chiefs have good day |
|
The Chiefs started the day meeting the unbeaten Atlantic team. Connor Nishimura went the distance and the team was successful beating the team from the East 4-2. The second game was the meeting of the two last unbeaten teams. The D3 team was not a favourite in this one as they met the host team from Saskatchewan. The team started flat giving up numerous errors on route to the wrong side of a 5-1 lead by the host team after one inning. Matt Craik took the mound in the second and pitched lights out holding the hosts to one more unearned run. Meanwhile on the bats the D3 team woke up and slowly chipped away at the lead with the dagger being weilded by Jon Derish in the 6th with a two rbi double. Final D3-9 Host 6. |

July 21, 2010 Juniors Lose in Final |
|
The Junior Allstars took on Coquitlam in the Provincial finals Wednesday night to see who advanced to the Canadian Championship. The team was ready to go after an exciting win the previous night. Unfortunately the bats were sluggish and Whalley fell behind 5-0. Excellent pitching by Cole Hunt held Coquitlam and Whalley made it 5-2. But that was as close as Whalley would get and Coquitlam prevailed 8-3.
A great Allstar season for all of the players. This group played the best competition around in Bantam AAA teams, US high school teams and select teams in Oliver - and they more than held their own. They did themselves and Whalley pround all the while having a lot of fun! |

In the other Championship Game, White Rock # 1 beat Hastings by a score of 14 - 13 to take the honors for a third straight year.
The coaching staff and parents are very proud of the boys, they showed character and dedication throughout this last month. The Whalley boys came in a very respectable 3rd place, out of 10 teams, wnning 7 out of their last 9 games of the season! What a great way to end the season boys! Congrats to all!

July 18, 2010 9 Year Olds in Semis |
|
Whalley 9 year old selects played another exciting game on Saturday afternoon! In the Quarter Final game, we were facing Coquitlam and fell behind 7-4 after two innings.
Brandon Green pitched a solid 2 innings, but un-earned runs made it difficult for the Whalley boys. Bailey Chiasson came in strong on the mound in the 3rd and 4th inning, striking out 4 batters, and allowing no runs. The Whalley boys bats got to work in the fifth and the boys rallied for 5 runs to make it 13 - 9. With Roman Guthrie on the mound pitching HEAT to close up the game, the Coquitlam squad started hitting the ball hard to the outfield. With 2 men out, Whalley ahead 14-12, and with the bases loaded, the Coquitlam batter came to bat, hit a line drive to right center field. Whalley CF, Andy Kliewer picked up the ball from center field, at the fence.and threw a BULLET, " a TSN BULLET HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT" "let me tell ya" to home plate catcher, Evan Alexander, who made the perfect CATCH & TAG for the final out of the game. The crowd, parents, players and coaches were left breathless watching the last play to end the game. OH and so were the coaches. LOL
The Whalley boys do have a lot of CHARACTER! They certainly know how to win as a TEAM! The coaching staff is extremely PROUD of them boys, and so are the parents! The boys are working and encouraging each other as teammates, it's very nice to see and experience!
The Whalley Team is playing in the Semi-Finals, tomorrow, Sunday, at noon, against Hasting. In the other Semi-Finals, South Vancouver vs White Rock # 1. The two winners will face off at 4:00 for the Championship game, and the losers will compete for 3rd and 4th place, at the same time on the other field.
We hope you can come and cheer on them boys!!!!!!

July 17, 2010 9 Year Olds into Quarter Finals in Langley |
|
The Whalley 9 Year Old Selects will be facing Coquitlam Saturday afternoon at 3:00 in Langley's District 3 Tournament.
The team started off the tournament going 3 and 0 before facing a determined South Vancouver Team. Whalley suffered it's first defeat of the tourney 13 - 7. SV's starting pitcher held us in check for the first 3 innings striking 6 of the 10 batters he faced. Ryan McCash started things with a double. Adam Vilio with a "good eye" at bat, was able to reach the bases twice, and also managed to score twice in the game. Roman Guthrie also had a tripple with the bases loaded at the top of the six, but it was too little too late for the boys.
The team is ready to face Coquitlam tomorrow in what should be another great game!
Come cheer on the boys!

July 12, 2010 Successful Sunday for 9's |
|
On Sunday, the Whalley 9 year old selects, won both their games, in what was two great games to be a part of. Both games went till the end before a winner could be decided.
In the first game, White Rock came out strong with their bats to take an early 5-2 lead. But with perseverance, the boys came back slowly, to make it 9-7 in favor of WR. In the fifth inning, the bats came to life for 5 scores, to make it 12-9. The team took the field one last time. Roman Guthrie was on the mound throwing HEAT, striking out 2 of the last 3 batters, before ending the game on a routine grounder, the boys held on for the win. Andy Kliewer started the game and pitched a solid 3 innings. Brandon Green came in relief, and also pitched a great game. What a great game this one was. Very exciting, to say the least!
The second game was against the home town, Langley. Whalley came out strong in this game taking early leads of 8-4 and 13-8 midway through the game, the bats were working big time. In the fourth inning, Langley put in their # 1 pitcher and what an exhibition this kid put on. He pitched 3 innings and shut us down, by only facing 13 batters and striking out 5. In the mean time, Langley kept closing the gap to make it 13-11 game going into the 6 and final inning. With the bases loaded and ZERO out, the Whalley boys, "infield in", went to work. 3rd Basemen, Ashton Kellogg, and Catcher, Evan Alexander made two great, solid plays to secure the 13-12 victory for Whalley. Ashton fielded a couple grounders and made 2 perfect throws to Evan waiting at home plate before tagging the player to end this nail-bitter of a game. Parents, Fans, and tournaments organizers were thrilled to watch this game. What a battle it was! The Coaching Staff and Parents are pretty proud of all these boys! They are a great bunch of kids!
Whalley is now 3 and 0, and will play their last game of the Round Robin on Tuesday night (6:00) against South Vancouver. Playoffs are schedule for next weekend.
Come cheer on the boys. It's exciting baseball!

July 11, 2010 9's Start out in Langley |
|
The Whalley 9 year old selects travelled to Langley on a hot and warm Saturday afternoon to take part in the Opening Ceremonies and Skills Competition events.
Evan Alexander placed a solid 4th in "Timed Throwing Accuracy" with a great time of 14:59 seconds. The drill was to throw 4 baseball at 1st base from different location around the diamond as fast and accurately as possible! Hope you enjoy your Prostocks Gift Certificate Evan! Congrats!
Shorthly after all the festivities, the Whalley team was scheduled to play Dunbar. The boys came up to play right from the start. Aggressive Base Running and discipline at bat led to an early lead in the game. Brandon Green, Roman Guthrie and Jacob Mahon, all pitching 2 great innings each, were solid on the mound to secure our first victory. A spectacular diving play by left fielder Randy Kilroy to save a few runs on what could have been a turning point in the game, could have definately made the TSN highlight play of the game! LOL The boys were up 12-2 after three innings and went on to win the game by a score of 14 - 6.
Sunday's schedule is the following: Noon Whalley vs White Rock #2
6 o'clock Whalley vs Langley
Come CHEER on the boys!

July 5, 2010 9 Year Old Selects Update from Cloverdale |
|
The Whalley 9 Year Old Selects played in the Cloverdale Boulanger Tournament this last weekend, and got off to a slow start in their first 2 games of the weekend, they battled back and made those 2 games interesting, to say the least. The team finished the tourney with a 1-2-1 record.
The team started the tourney by playing Abbotsford. The team was behind 11-2 after 3 innings. They battled back, only to come up short at the end of it by losing 17-12. Andy Kliewer was named the player of the game with some amazing catches in the outfield and a solid performance at the plate as well.
In our second game, the team got off to a slow start against Richmond, but the boys rallied back and came back to tie the game at 14 all, after being behind 14-7. Jacob Mahon was named the player of the game with a solid 2 1\3 innings of pitching.
Our 3rd game was against the hosting team, Cloverdale. Our boys started the game off strong by making solid defensive plays, but the more experienced home town team took control of the game soon after never looking back. Our game MVP with a solid performance at 3rd base was Braden Scott.
Game four, was the Consolation game against Rutland (Kelowna), and our team came ready to play from the start. The team took the lead, never looking back, and won their first game of the season by a score of 13-12. The player of the game was Brandon Green, coming back from an injury, he played in his first game of the tourney and pitched the last 3 innings as well as contributing at the plate.
The Whalley parents, coaches and players would like to say a big THANK YOU to the Cloverdale Baseball Association for there hospitality and hard work put in by their many volunteers. A great tournament it was!
Whalley 9 Year-Old Selects will be playing their annual District Tournament starting next Saturday in Langley. Our Schedule is the following:

July 5, 2010 Juniors go 2-2 in Oliver |
|
The Junior Allstars travelled to Oliver for the Can Am FUTURES 14U Classic this past long weekend. The team was looking for strong competition and they certainly got it. The team ended up going 2-2 and lost in the tournament semifinals.
The team opened with a win over Coquitlam behind the strong pitching of Brandon Bohn who relieved starter Will Gladwell and in the 3rd inning and went 5 strong for the victory. The 2nd game saw the team play the "Lime" Mizuno Camp team. Starting pitcher Robbie Bevacqua pitched superbly against a very strong batting lineup. Rob left the game in a 3-3 tie after 5 and the "Lime team" ultimately prevailed. The loss meant a victory over Alberta's Sherwood Park was needed in order to have a chance of making the semi finals. Starter Jordan Atkinson made sure of that with a dominating outing against Sherwoord Park going the distance in an 11-1 victory. In the semi final game the team came up against the other Mizuno Camp team. Unfortunately the "Red" team jumped out to an early lead after 1 inning and Whalley couldn't recover and went on to loose. All in all, a positive step in preparing for the Provincial Championship starting July 17th at Blue Mountain in Coquitlam. |

|
July 3, 2010 Minor 9/10 All-Stars beat North Langley |
|
Game 2 against North Langley was a back and forth affair with our Whalley boys coming out on top 11-9.
Our boys were able to put the bat on the ball a little better today which gave us more opportunity to use our speed on the bases. Jovan Gill, Terrin Kandola and Matt Dalgleish all hit doubles while Tyler Bailey hit an opposite field triple.
Billy Kranidas had a great day at the plate going two for two and scoring twice while his brother Kyle laid down a beautifullead off bunt in the fifth inning to get on and eventually score the game winning run.
North Langleycame to the plate in the top of the sixth down by three but only managed one run thanks to some good closing pitching Matt Dalgleish and great heads up defence by Andrew Morin to get the last out of the game.
The final will be on Sunday at 1:30 against White Rock at Walnut Grove Park. Come and check it out!!! |

July 1, 2010 Whalley Juniors Start Right Against AAA Bantams |
|
Last night saw the Whalley Juniors take on the talented North Delta AAA Bantams in Whalley. Manager Rob Watt divided the pitching duties among 4 pitchers to keep them loose for this weekends tournament. Manager Watt handled the defensive changes with the skill of a veteran using his 20 plus years of coaching experience in order to provide a solid lineup and strong showing. Robbie Bevaqua started on the mound pitching 2 Will Gladwell-2, Brandon Bohn-2 and Braeden Alleman closing. Hits were scarce for both teams, however the Whalley defence was impenetrateable. The final score was Whalley 2 and North Delta 0. The pitchers were awesome and the defence was stellar. Manager Watt Coach Fischer and Coach Robazza were pleased with the effort. A doctor was called late last night in an attempt to surgically remove the smile off of Coach Pouwells face. Great start to the 2010 season. |

July 1, 2010 Minor 9/10 All-Stars beat White Rock |
|
Well the Whalley 9/10 minors won their first game of the tournament today 9-6 against a very competitive team from White Rock.
On the back of some strong pitching by Tyler Bailey, Terrin Kandola, Amrit Gill, Matthew Dalgleish and closer Brandon Boyo. The staff held the White Rock hitters to only four hits all game. The game was a one run game for the first four innings with some fantastic defensive plays by Jovan Gill. With the game in the top of the 5th inning and the team down 6-4 Billy Kranidas made it on base and worked his way to third. Billy scored on a pass ball while the next three batters Clayton Compeau, Matthew Slater and Terrin Kandola all took walks to reach bas. With the team down by one Matthew Dalgleish stepped up to the plate and delivered a two out double to center field to score two runs and take the lead.
In the bottom of the fifth and the team now up by a run Matthew Dalgleish took only four batters to retire the side with some more defensive beauties by Jovan Gill. With the game now going into the 6th and last inning Tyler Bailey lead the team off by hustling to beat out an infield single. By the time the top of the 6th was over both Tyler and Jovan had scored to give us a three run cushion.
Brandon Boyo came in to close the game and what a job he did. First hitter Brandon got him to ground out to first on three pitches. Second hitter hit a bullet to third but Jovan picked it up and threw a laser to first for the second out. The last batter of the game, Brandon decided to take care of himself by striking him out to end the game. All in all a great win for the kids! |

June 25, 2010 Reds Take Junior Playoff Crown! |
|
The Reds defeated the Yankees 7-4 in Thursday's Junior final to take the Junior Division Playoff crown.
Trailing 2-0 into the 4th, the Yankees scored 4 runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom half of the same inning the Reds put together 6 hits - including 3 doubles - and scored 5 runs to take a 7-4 lead. Matthew Wong came on in relief of Daniel Singer in the 4th and shut the door for the rest of the way. Both Matthew and Daniel showed great heart battling their way thru a tough Yankee lineup. Stellar defensive play from Reds catcher Keirnan Hedberg certainly helped them!
Great game. Congratulations to both teams on a great season and playoff. |

June 17, 2010 Cardinals Take Major Division Playoff Final |
|
Wednesday night the league champion Yankees took on the upstart Cardinals in the Major Division Final. The Cardinals had eliminated the 2nd place Dodgers on Tuesday night and had an upset on their mind.
The Cardinals got off to a quick start in top of the 1st scoring two runs. They pushed the lead first to 3-1 and then to 6-1 after 4 innings. It looked like the game might get out of hand but in the bottom of the 5th the Yankees started to rally by scoring 4 runs making the score 6-5 after 5 innings.
In the top of the 6th the Cardinals scored a run giving them a 2 run lead going into the Yankees last at bat. In that inning the Yankees put the ball in play, got a runner to 2nd and the tieing run up to the plate - but solid defence by the left side of the Cardinal infield shut down any hopes of a comeback. Final score Cardinals 7 and Yankees 5. It was definitely an exciting final and one enjoyed by a big crowd of spectators. Congratulations to Ron, Don, Bob and all of the Cardinal players! Well done. |

May 26, 2010 Whalley Minor 9-10 May Long Weekend Tournament |
|
This year the Whalley Minor 9-10 tournament had 6 teams. There were 3 from Whalley, 2 from Hastings and 1 from North Langley. The round robin portion of the tournament produced 2 teams going undefeated. In the semi finals 2 Whalley teams battled the 2 Hastings teams, unfortunately they both came up short. It set up a Hastings vs Hastings final. It was a hard fought game with the Hastings Yankees coming out of it with the victory.
A special thanks to all the parents for your help in the concession and getting the fields ready to play on. To the coaches, it is people like you willing to give up your long weekend for the kids that make Whalley the class Little League program that it is and I thank you for that.
Thanks

May 26, 2010 Major Yanks Battle To Championship at Makin Yard |
|
The Whalley major Yankees fought back to win it all at the Coquitlam
(Memorial) Victoria Day major tournament in dramatic fashion. After faltering in game 2 they needed to win every game Sunday to qualify for the final .The Yanks came out pounding the ball hard Sunday. Will Smith started things off with a big 2 run homer and Wallopping Whally Walcott wallopped two out over the fence and into the ditch at the south diamond as the Yanks bombed their way to a mercy win Sunday morning. Mark Vellios tried retrieving the ball but became mired in mud up to his neck but was rescued. At 3 pm, Nicholas(Spitz)Vellios pitched a great game going all the way in a tight tough game. Time after time it was the four 10 year olds who kept the team alive by getting key hard hits. Jared and Josh got on in the 2nd and Fizz knocked one up the middle to RBI Hauss. Kit Carson fought hard to get on base and bring up the top of the order. Daniel Dirt Jones kept scoring and making great defensive plays and Alex Nails Faulkner-Chow was solid at the plate getting on base and scoring at key times. Whally Wallcot wallopped
a walk off three run homer to end the game in grand fashion.
In the final on Monday against defending Champions Hastings Expos, Eric (Ports) Porter scored early to get the team on the board. Once again the younger kids came through with the game tied 1-1. Alex and Jared got on and were driven home when Fizz lined one up the middle
to put the Yanks ahead 2-1. Winning pitcher JC Ciliberto helped himself by launching one out for a 3 run dinger to put the Yanks up 5-2.Solid closer Ryan Larsen came in to finish off Hastings for his 2nd save of the tourney and the Yanks shut em down to win it all and celebrate the thrill of victory.
